In Tennessee, there are three weather conditions that can cause problems – flash flooding, tornadoes, thunderstorms and lightning. It’s important to know how to handle yourself and protect your family in each of these conditions. With a plan and a common sense approach, ou can keep everyone safe.
Flash flooding – Floods can happen quickly and that’s the main reason people get caught unaware. These type weather conditions can happen anytime and almost anywhere. And once you are caught in these type weather conditions, it’s sometimes hard to find an escape route. So it’s important to plan your route ahead of time. This is especially important if you are in a flood prone area, but it’s important regardless of where you live. When you are driving, avoid crossing water even if it seems to be shallow and not moving very fast. These crossings can be very deceiving. If you vehicle stalls in the water, leave it immediately. A car can float in as little as a foot of water.
Tornadoes – These type weather conditions can sneak up on you in a heartbeat. It’s important to have a weather radio available at all times during these weather conditions. Also consider having an emergency backpack or something similar. In this backpack, you will have a flashlight, waterproofed matches, batteries, a charger for your smart phone that doesn’t require electricity, a few food items, water, and anything else you think you may need. You may even consider placing an extra pair of shoes.
Thunderstorms and lightning – Take shelter in a building or a hard top car. Don’t be on or near the water. If you are on the golf course, head back to the golf house as soon as possible at the first sign of bad weather.
Being safe is simply in bad weather conditions a matter of using common sense and having a plan. Be safe!
