Winterize Your Home

If you want to save money on your home heating costs this winter, think about what you need to do to winterize your home. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it’s time to start thinking about protecting your home from the damaging effects of cold weather.

Here is how you can get ready for winter and protect your home:

1.  You have a lot invested in your home heating and cooling unit. It’s worth spending around $100 to get a tune-up and keep your unit running well this winter.

2.  Ceiling fans. For the winter months, you want to push warm air downward. Make sure your fan blades are turning clockwise for the so the air will circulate more easily.

3.  Wrap your outside faucets and pipes. Faucet covers are very inexpensive and they work great.

4.  If you have a fireplace, clean your chimney. Chimneys filled not cleaned on a regular basis are a common cause of house fires.

5.  Check for air leaks around your doors and windows. This will keep you more comfortable on those cold winter nights and save you money on home heating costs.

6.  Check your smoke alarms in the fall. Go ahead and change your batteries now before you have to hunt down the one smoke alarm that is chirping in the middle of the night.

7.  Wear a sweater. Lowering your home temperature only 1 degree could save you 1 – 3% on your home heating bill.
